New Delhi, Oct 9 (IANS) Union Home Minister Amit Shah will unveil a series of projects worth Rs 1,816 crore in New Delhi on Thursday, a major step in what he described as a “historic mission” to revive the Yamuna river.

The initiative aims to tackle the long-standing water and sewerage problem in the national capital and restore the purity of the river.

Home Minister Shah will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of several important projects worth over Rs 1,816 crore, including schemes related to clean water supply and a series of special projects aimed at river rejuvenation and purification.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said in a statement issued by the CMO that cleaning and reviving the Yamuna is one of the top priorities of the Delhi government. He said that the state administration is getting full support from the Center in this endeavour.

Gupta said, “Restoring the purity of Yamuna is the top priority of the Delhi government, which is getting full support from the Centre.”

According to the statement, the upcoming projects will address the root causes of pollution by improving water and sewerage infrastructure.

These include construction and upgrading of sewage treatment plants (STPs) and sewer lines, which is an important step to ensure that untreated sewage no longer flows into the Yamuna.

Gupta said that 22 major drains across Delhi are being equipped with STPs to prevent direct flow of sewage into the river.

Treated water from these plants will be released back into the Yamuna, which will significantly reduce pollution levels and improve water quality over time.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed his government’s determination to clean and revive the Yamuna, fulfilling a key promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its assembly election manifesto earlier this year.

“The Delhi government is committed to making the Yamuna pollution-free, clean and revitalized, as promised by the BJP in its manifesto for the assembly elections in February this year,” he said.

Appealing to citizens to actively participate in the river-cleaning campaign, Gupta stressed that the success of the initiative depends on public cooperation.
