Chennai, Oct 22 (IANS) With the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) issuing red and orange alerts for several districts in Tamil Nadu, opposition leaders – AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran – on Wednesday urged the DMK government to take immediate precautionary and relief measures to prevent loss of life and property.
Palaniswami said in a statement that due to the deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal, very heavy rains are expected in Chennai and northern coastal districts including the Cauvery delta region.
“Since rainfall is likely to increase, I urge the DMK government to take precautionary measures on war footing,” he said.
He appealed to the public to remain vigilant and follow all safety advisories issued by the authorities.
The former chief minister also directed AIADMK administrators and party workers to remain alert, assist residents of affected areas and coordinate with local authorities to provide assistance where needed.
Meanwhile, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran also expressed similar concerns and called on the ruling DMK to ensure that all preventive measures are taken in view of the forecast of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several districts.
Citing reports of two separate low pressure systems developing over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, he said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for eight districts and an orange alert for ten others.
Referring to Chief Minister MK Stalin’s recent virtual review meeting with district collectors, he said, “At this critical juncture, the DMK government should not limit itself to video conferences only. It should act on a war footing and make all necessary preparations to face any possible disaster.”
The BJP leader stressed that the state administration should be fully prepared to deal with the emergency situation arising out of the intensifying northeast monsoon.
He also appealed to fishermen and general public to exercise caution and give priority to safety during this period of heavy rains.
