Chennai, Nov 12 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has decided to deploy additional manpower across all its distribution areas to manage the increased workload during monsoon and ensure uninterrupted power supply across the state.
While such temporary staff were earlier employed only in Chennai and Kanchipuram distribution areas, this is the first time that TNPDCL is expanding this initiative to all the remaining ten distribution areas.
The decision is aimed at strengthening field-level operations and expediting restoration work such as replacing damaged poles and repairing power lines affected by heavy rains or strong winds.
The temporary workers will be hired as per the schedule of rates of the Public Works Department, under which they will get a daily wage of Rs 716. The engagement period will run till January 31, 2026, covering the entire monsoon season and beyond.
Each section office located in sensitive coastal and high-risk areas has been allowed to appoint a maximum of four temporary staff, while other section offices can appoint two staff as per requirement.
Throughout Tamil Nadu, TNPDCL operates approximately 2,800 section offices, thereby substantially increasing the number of field personnel available for emergency response and maintenance activities.
With around 55,000 vacancies in various categories across the state, the discoms are facing an acute shortage of manpower. The deployment of temporary staff aims to bridge this gap and provide vital support to existing staff, especially during heavy rains when the number of power outages typically increases rapidly.
The Corporation has directed regional and section-level engineers to ensure that adequate staff is available on rotation duty to deal with the outage and complete the restoration work immediately.
The deployment plan will also be adjusted in coordination with real-time weather alerts and the vulnerability of each area. By expanding manpower resources across the state, TNPDCL is expected to improve its operational efficiency and minimize disruptions, thereby maintaining stable and reliable power supply to consumers during the monsoon months.
