American man with ingrown hair in groin falls into coma, with only 4% survival rate

He eventually fell into a medically induced coma.

A man named Steven Spinale is reportedly recovering from sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by infected ingrown hairs. New York Post.

According to a TikTok video posted by his sister Michelle, Steven developed sepsis in late 2022 after trying to remove an ingrown hair from his groin area. Sepsis is a severe response of the body’s immune system to an infection that can lead to organ failure and death if left untreated, news outlets reported.

The Silent Killer Enters the Battle

Sepsis is a serious medical emergency often called the “silent killer” because it is difficult to diagnose. The National Institutes of Health estimates that 1.7 million Americans develop sepsis each year, and nearly 270,000 people die each year.

In Steven’s case, an infection caused by an ingrown hair escalated into septic shock, leading to blood clots, pneumonia, organ failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The infection even reached his heart, causing severe damage.

“His condition deteriorated rapidly until he fell and was placed on life support,” she added.

“He discovered a rare bacteria that was wreaking havoc [through] his body and shut down all his organs. He had severe sepsis and was in shock. “

Doctors fight for survival

Due to his critical condition, Steven was placed in a medically induced coma to allow his body to heal. Doctors initially declared him brain dead and thought his chances of survival were very low.

However, after a month of intensive treatment and surgery, Steven overcame the odds. He emerged from the coma with no brain damage and made an almost full recovery.
