New Delhi, September 18 (IANS) Senior Samajwadi Party leader and former cabinet minister Mohammad Azam Khan, in a significant relief, was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court on Thursday in the controversial Rampur ‘Quality Bar’ land grab.
The single bench of Justice Sameer Jain ordered, which was reserved after hearing arguments from all sides on 21 August.
On May 17, 2025, after the Rampur MP-MLA court dismissed his bail plea, the Khan was kept in jail, transferred to the High Court.
The case is related to the allegations that the Khan, along with others, illegally occupied the land related to the popular quality strip located on the highway in the Nagar Hardoi Strip under the limits of Civil Lines Police Station in Rampur.
The dispute returned on November 21, 2019, when the owner of the bar, Gagan Arora filed a complaint alleging encroachment.
Acting on his complaint, then Revenue Inspector Anangraj Singh filed a cedar, which included Rampur Municipal President Syed Jaffer Ali Jaffrey, Azam Khan’s wife and former MP Tazine Fatma, and his son, former MLA Abdulla Azam Khan.
During the investigation, the police also made Azam Khan an accused in the case.
Subsequently, his bail was filed before the Rampur MP-MLA court, but was rejected earlier this year, inspiring him to reach the High Court.
The High Court order now cleared the way for Khan’s release in this particular case.
In particular, this is Azam Khan’s third consecutive relief in a week.
Earlier on September 10, he was granted bail in the Dungarpur case by the High Court, while on 16 September, the Rampur court acquitted him in contempt of court case.
Khan, once the Muslim face of the Samajwadi Party and the party’s Patrik Mulayam Singh Yadav, has been included in a series of legal controversies in recent years, from alleged land encroachers to corruption cases.
