Earlier, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had faced the decision to put the Indus Water Treaty in Abhay on 28 April as a bold step under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Talking to ANI, CM Dhami insisted that today’s India knows how to maintain both friendship and enmity.
He said, “This is a very good decision under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Blood and water cannot flow together. Today’s India knows how to maintain both friendship and enmity,” he said.
The Indus Water Treaty was signed in 1960 after a nine -year conversation between India and Pakistan with the help of the World Bank, which is also a signator. Former World Bank President Eugene Black started talks.
One of the most successful international treaties is recognized as, it has tolerated constant stress including conflict, and has provided a framework for irrigation and hydroelectric development for more than half a century. Former US President Dwight Eisenhower described it in a very disappointing world picture “a bright place … which we often see.”
The treaty allocates Western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab) to Pakistan and Eastern Rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlage) in India. At the same time, the treaty allows each country for some uses of allotted rivers to another. This treaty gives India 20% water from the Indus river system and the remaining 80% to Pakistan.
The attack in Pahgam is one of the most deadly attacks in the valley since the 2019 Pulwama strike, killing 40 CRPF personnel. After the Pahalgam terror attack, India has taken strong measures to support cross-limit terrorism against Pavistan, including the Indus Water Treaty. (AI)
