All 22 Indian crew members who crashed into Baltimore Bridge are safe

All 22 crew members on board the container ship that hit Baltimore’s Key Bridge were Indians and reported “electrical issues” to authorities before the collision. They are said to be safe and reliable.

The crew, including the two pilots, are missing and there are no reports of injuries. Charter manager Synergy Marine Group said there was no contamination either. The registered owner of the Singapore-flagged vessel is Grace Ocean Pte Ltd.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told a news conference that the ship came in “at a very high speed” and lost power before the collision.

Moore told reporters that the container ship was traveling relatively fast, about eight knots, and lost power before hitting the bridge. He also said preliminary findings suggested it was “an accident” and there was no evidence of a terrorist attack. Moore said the distress call allowed workers to stop more vehicles from entering the bridge.

“We can confirm that the crew notified the authorities of the electrical issue,” Moore said.

Moore said officers on scene stopped cars from driving across the bridge as soon as the distress signal was sent. “These guys are heroes,” he said. “They saved lives last night.”

“We had a boat coming in at 8 knots, so it was pretty fast,” Moore explained. “I have to say, I’m grateful for those people who were able to stop cars from going across the bridge once the warning came, when the distress call came out, those people are heroes. They saved lives last night,” the governor said.

Moore, who has declared a state of emergency in Maryland, said, “We are working with an interagency team to rapidly deploy federal resources from the (Joe) Biden administration.”
