And now a Democrat lawmaker has been accused of raping a minor. Terrifying!

A North Carolina state lawmaker was arrested Wednesday and charged with multiple sexual assaults.

Cecil Brockman, a Democrat representing Guilford County in the North Carolina House of Representatives, was charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child and two counts of statutory rape of someone between the ages of 13 and 15.

He is being held without bond at the High Point Detention Center and is expected to appear in court Thursday.

A magistrate’s order denying bail to Brockman cited his role as a representative of the state, which has “abundant resources to aid his escape from prosecution.”

Brockman has made attempts to contact the victim, including using his position and “attempting to locate the teen at the hospital,” according to the order.

The MLA’s legislative assistant declined to comment.

Democratic Governor Josh Stein called the allegations “extremely serious and deeply troubling.”

“While the legal process is still pending, it is clear that he cannot effectively serve his constituents and must resign immediately,” Stein said in a statement.

House Minority Leader Robert Reeves said the allegations against Brockman are serious and “if true, he would be disqualified from public office.” Ural noted.

“This is a developing situation and it is important to let the legal process unfold,” Reeves said.

In an updated statement, Reeves said, “As we continue to learn more about the allegations against Representative Brockman this morning, it has become clear that he is unable to continue serving in the House of Representatives. Representative Brockman must resign immediately.”

Before Reeves’ additional comments, the North Carolina Democratic Party first called on Brockman to resign immediately.

“The extreme seriousness of these criminal charges makes it impossible for him to effectively represent his community,” the party said in a statement.

House Speaker Destin Hall, R-Caldwell, also called on Brockman to resign, calling the allegations “shocking and extremely serious.”
