Aldi supermarkets have revealed sales hit £1.65bn in the Christmas month as price remains the “top consideration” for shoppers.

The group reported a 3% rise in total sales in the four weeks to Christmas Eve, with a record 57 million transactions.

The German discounter – Britain’s fourth-largest grocery chain – said sales rose by more than 5% in the final trading week before Christmas, with around £500 million added to checkouts.

The month-long growth performance was slightly slower than last Christmas, when sales rose 3.4%.

Aldi said Tuesday, December 22, was its busiest trading day over the festive period.

Demand for meat and vegetables during the main festive season was strong in the UK, with customers buying 56 million potatoes, 37 million carrots and 500,000 turkeys.

The group also sold more than 5.5 million bottles of sparkling wine during the festive period.

In September, Aldi announced a further investment of 1.6 billion pounds to accelerate its UK supermarket expansion, with plans to open 80 supermarkets in the next two years.

The chain currently has around 1,060 stores and has previously said it aims to open 1,500 stores in the UK.
