Airbnb said on Monday it would ban security cameras from guest rooms in an effort to prioritize privacy.
The home rental platform previously allowed indoor security cameras in common areas such as hallways and living rooms, as long as they were clearly visible and disclosed in the listing before people booked such properties.
However, people have complained on social media about finding seemingly hidden cameras in Airbnb properties, some of which are located in areas that require privacy.
“Airbnb is banning indoor security cameras in listings globally to simplify our policies around security cameras and other devices and continue to prioritize our communities,” the San Francisco-based company said in a blog post. privacy.” .
The new policy, along with tightened rules for outdoor security cameras at Airbnb properties, will take effect on April 30.
“Our goal is to create new, clear rules that give our community a clearer understanding of Airbnb’s expectations,” Juniper Downs, director of community policy and partnerships, said in an online post.
Doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors will still be allowed by Airbnb for home security and detecting unauthorized persons, according to the company.
Hosts will be required to disclose the location of any outdoor security cameras that cannot monitor areas such as outdoor showers or saunas, Airbnb said in the post.
