Mammootty’s upcoming horror thriller Bramayugam has been mired in a simmering controversy just days before its world premiere on February 16. Directed by Rahul Sadasivan and produced by Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios, the film stars Mammooty and also stars Arjun Ashokan and Sidharth Bharathan. Role. However, the focus has shifted from the anticipation of the film to the legal dispute surrounding Mammootty’s character’s name.

A petition was recently filed in the Kerala High Court urging that the character’s name be changed from Kunjumon Potty to Kodumon Potti. The move came after the patriarch of the Punjabi Illam, a traditional Brahmin family in Kerala, objected, citing concerns that the portrayal could tarnish their family’s reputation. The petitioners expressed concern that the film’s depiction of Kunjumon Potty may have a negative impact on their lineage, leading to a loss of respect and honor in society.

The complainant claimed that “failure to change the name and traditional hometown of the protagonist would cause serious prejudice to the complainant, his family, ancestors and heirs” while seeking to have the film’s certification revoked.

In response, the filmmakers moved quickly, choosing to change the character’s name to Kodumon Poti. This decision was reflected on multiple platforms, including editing the song “Kunjumon Potti Theme” on YouTube to the “Kodumon Potti Theme”, and modifying posters and promotional materials accordingly.

Realizing the seriousness of the situation, the producers also submitted a request to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to officially change the character’s name. As a result, the Wikipedia page, soundtrack, and online content have all been updated to reflect the revised nomenclature of the mammoth character in the film.

The ongoing controversy has sparked discussions about film’s creative freedom and cultural sensitivity, highlighting the complex interplay between artistic expression and social norms. With Brahma Yugam set to hit theaters soon, all eyes are on how the resolution of this controversy will impact the film’s reception among the audience.
