Ahead of polls, 3 special observers reach Tripura to review situation

A three-member team of special observers have arrived Tripura on Monday to take stock of the situation ahead of the Assembly polls scheduled to be held on next February 16.

The team members are general observer Yogendra Tripathy, police observer Vivek Johri and expenditure observer B. Murali Kumar.

In their two-day visit, the officials would convene meeting with state-level higher officials at State Guest House on Tuesday morning to review the ongoing situation in the state. It would be followed by another meeting regarding overall poll-related situation with district magistrates, superintendents of police and nodal officers of all total eight districts via video conference.

“ There is no scheduled programme of the special observers today. They will hold two separate meetings with the state officials tomorrow, “ an official from the Election Department said.

Later, the team would submit the report to the Election Commission of India.

The ECI appointed these three special observers to take stock of the situation and ensure deployment of adequate central armed police forces after All India Congress Committee ( AICC) general secretary Dr. Ajay Kumar was injured in a political clash on the day of announcement of the Assembly poll schedule.

The incident happened amidst the Election Commission’s zero poll violence campaign to ensure free and peaceful poll.

So far, eight persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident. Two officers in-charge were removed and one sub divisional police officer was suspended for not taking appropriate action in time.
