Agricultural backbone of India’s economy, and farmers are its soul: Shivraj Singh Chauhan

Justin, 05/10/202505/10/2025

New Delhi, October 4 (IANS) Union Minister of Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chauhan on Saturday participated in the Rabi workshop and agricultural advisory dialogue in Patna during a visit to Bihar.

Addressing agricultural scientists, advisors and farmers in this incident, Chauhan said, “Agriculture is the backbone of India’s economy, and farmers are its souls. Serving farmers is like worshiping God.”

Recalling India’s agricultural change, the Union Minister said, “There was a time when India imported red wheat from the United States under the PL -480 program. Today, our granular wheat and rice are full of wheat and rice, and India is in a position to export food grains to other countries.” He credited this progress for the tireless efforts of farmers and significant contribution of agricultural advisors.

Appreciating the role of agricultural advisors, Chauhan said that without them, the achievements of research laboratories would never reach the ground level. “The government has recognized both the need and value of agricultural advisors, and is fully committed to protect their respect and interests,” he said.

Exposing Bihar’s capacity in pulses and maize production, the Union Minister said, “Through the mission of pulses, India will achieve self -sufficiency in pulse production, and agricultural advisors will play an important role in this effort.” He also referred to the recent increase in the minimum support prices (MSP) approved by the Union Cabinet.

During the program, Chauhan said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Paddy-Dhanya Krishi Juzana focuses on low productivity districts including many in Bihar. “Under this scheme, 11 departments will work collectively and in coordination to promote agricultural productivity,” he said.

Looking at the Prime Minister’s guide theory as a guide to the ‘Rashtriya Saravopari’ (Nation First), Chauhan said that India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers. “India is moving forward as an independent and sovereign nation today, working on its terms,” he said.

Appreciating the achievements of the farmers of Bihar, the Union Minister said that the state continues to lead in many crops and agriculture will remain the strongest basis of India’s prosperity in the years ahead.
