An Air India flight from Hong Kong to Delhi, soon after the aircraft launched at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi, faced an assistant power unit (APU) fire on Tuesday.

APU is a small engine that is usually located on the tail of an aircraft. This provides strength to the required systems when the main engines are closed, such as during boarding, or when parked at the aircraft gate.

According to the airline, the incident occurred when the aircraft was parked at the gate and the passengers started disintegrating.

“Flight AI 315, working from Hong Kong to Delhi on 22 July 2025, experienced an assistant power unit (APU) when it landed and parked at the gate. The incident occurred when the passengers started disrupting, and APU was automatically closed according to the system design,” an Air India spokesman said in a statement.

The statement said, “The aircraft had some damage, however, passengers and crew members were generally disintegrated, and are safe. The aircraft has been made the basis for further investigation and the regulator is duly notified,” the statement said.

There was no injury between passengers or crew members. The aircraft is pending a technical evaluation and inspection by regulatory officials in Delhi, it is added, the couple.
