Guwahati, Nov 5 (IANS) Former Union minister and four-time MP from Nagaon Rajen Gohain, who formally joined the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), on Wednesday signaled a significant political shift in Assam’s emerging political scenario, launching a scathing attack on the state BJP leadership and calling it a “Hitler regime” – a jibe perhaps aimed at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Addressing reporters after joining the AJP, Gohain said, “We expected a national party like BJP to do well for the Assamese people; however, I can say that Hitler rule is going on in the state. The entire Assamese community has been broken into pieces through the delimitation process.”
The former Union minister also accused the BJP of looting Assam and claimed that the state’s resources were being given to outsiders. Gohain also praised the top leadership of the Congress and said, “I believe Rahul Gandhi has raised a very important issue of vote manipulation, and there are good people in the Congress. A party can be made better when good people remain in the party.”
He stressed that AJP should consider an alliance with the Congress party for the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
The veteran leader also alleged that the people who damaged Tarun Gogoi’s image are now leading the BJP in Assam.
Notably, the former Nagaon MP, once considered a key leader of the BJP in the state, resigned from the party on October 9 citing “growing dissatisfaction” towards the leadership and direction.
Gohain joined AJP along with a group of his supporters at a function held at the PWD auditorium in Guwahati.
Many senior AJP leaders including party president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, working president Chitta Basumatary and senior leader Jagdish Bhuiyan attended the event.
After being welcomed into the regional party, Gohain said he would continue to serve the people with honesty and dedication. “Wherever I am, I have always tried to perform my duties with honesty and commitment. I will continue to do so here too,” he said.
Expressing his dissatisfaction over the current functioning of the BJP, Gohain said that the party has “moved far away from the ideals of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and veteran leader LK Advani”.
The AJP leader commented, “I have been patient for a long time, but the current situation is extremely disappointing. We did not join this party to see personality-based politics. Now it has played into the hands of people who have little connection with the founding values of the party.”
