Kolkata, Oct 18 (IANS) Congress on Saturday said Leader of the Opposition (LOP) in the Lok Sabha and senior party leader Rahul Gandhi may start his election campaign in West Bengal in late November or early December.
Party sources said Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury may be given a bigger responsibility during the state assembly elections next year.
The results of Bihar assembly elections will be declared on 14 November.
According to Congress, after Bihar elections, Rahul Gandhi can visit West Bengal for election campaign.
All India Congress Committee (AICC) observer for West Bengal Ghulam Ahmed Mir on Saturday talked about Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Bengal for the election campaign.
Mir said, “We are a national party and the central leadership of the Congress will come to Bengal for the election campaign. Rahul Gandhi has more connection with Bengal, with the people here. The central leadership of our party will come to Bengal only after the Bihar elections are over.”
The senior Congress leader also said, “For the last six months, we have been preparing the political ground in West Bengal. We are forming teams up to the booth level. Then Rahul Gandhi will come and give his message to the people of Bengal through our party workers. He will address the people of West Bengal on important issues. Later, when the elections are held after six months, the people of West Bengal will take the decision.”
When Mir was asked when Rahul Gandhi would visit West Bengal, he said, “We are trying to ensure that Rahul Gandhi comes to West Bengal before the New Year. But it depends on the State Congress Committee. First of all, the district, block, booth committees of the party have to be strengthened so that the message of the party’s central leadership reaches every corner of the state. This process of the party will be completed by mid-November. By then, elections will be held in the state.” Bihar will also end. Then, Rahul Gandhi will definitely focus on West Bengal.”
Speculation is intense regarding the role of former state Congress President Adhir Ranjan Choudhary during the assembly elections to be held in West Bengal next year.
Choudhary is currently elected as the election observer of Congress in Bihar.
Regarding the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, Mir said, “He (Adhir Ranjan Choudhary) is a senior leader of the Congress. He has fulfilled many responsibilities. Subhankar Sarkar was appointed as the state Congress president because he was also fulfilling many responsibilities. However, Adhir Ranjan Choudhary still has an important role to play.”
