Chennai, Nov 13 (IANS) In a dramatic court scene at the Madras High Court complex, history-sheeter ‘Karukka’ Vinoth attempted to throw his shoes at the judge hearing a separate criminal case on Thursday, just a day after he was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in the 2023 petrol bomb attack outside Raj Bhavan.
Vinoth, who has multiple cases registered against him, was convicted by the special court for National Investigation Agency (NIA) cases in Poonamallee on Wednesday.
Judge T. Chandrasekaran found him guilty of throwing a petrol bomb at Raj Bhavan Gate-1 on October 25, 2023.
The court, taking into account the seriousness of the attack and his involvement in similar previous incidents, sentenced him to ten years of rigorous imprisonment.
On Thursday, Vinoth was taken from the Central Prison, Puzhal, to the Sixth Additional Sessions Court located in the Madras High Court complex.
He was to appear for hearing in another case filed against him, this time for the petrol bomb attack on the Tasmac outlet in T. Nagar, an incident that took place before the Raj Bhavan attack.
According to court sources, Vinoth was visibly agitated the moment he was brought inside the courtroom of Sixth Additional Sessions Judge Pandiarajan. As the proceedings were about to begin, he suddenly shouted that the 10-year sentence given to him in the Raj Bhavan case was “too harsh” and claimed that he was being unfairly targeted.
Before the court staff and policemen could react, he took out a slipper and attempted to throw it towards the judge.
The shoes did not reach the judge’s dais and alert police officials immediately overpowered Vinoth and restrained him before taking him out of the courtroom.
The unexpected explosion caused a brief panic in the courtroom but no one was injured.
After the incident, Judge Pandiarajan expressed displeasure over the conduct of the accused and directed the jail authorities to ensure tight security arrangements during future hearings.
The court also ordered that Vinoth be produced only through video conferencing for all subsequent proceedings to avoid further disruptions or security risks.
Officials said an internal report would be submitted on the security lapse, and additional charges could be considered depending on the outcome of the investigation.
The hearing in the T. Nagar petrol bomb case is still ongoing, while Vinoth has started serving his 10-year sentence in the Raj Bhavan attack.
