First printed in 1818, the almanac was beloved by farmers and gardeners and, like the arguably more famous Old Farmer’s Almanac, relied on secret formulas of sunspots, planetary positions, and lunar cycles to generate long-range weather forecasts.
It has been acquired by Unofficial Networks, a digital publisher specializing in skiing and outdoor recreation. This means that the yearbook will continue to run despite announcing in November that its 208-year run was coming to an end.
Tim Konrad, founder and publisher of New York-based Unofficial Networks, said the new Farmers’ Almanac website will be “a vibrant publication full of fresh content” and plans to return to the print version.
“I saw the news that one of America’s most enduring publications was closing, and it felt wrong to stand by while our irreplaceable national legacy was lost,” Conrad said.
The deal will prioritize “protecting and sustaining this iconic publication,” according to a statement from Unofficial Network and longtime Almanac publisher Peter Geiger.
The Farmers’ Almanac was founded in New Jersey and moved its headquarters to Lewiston, Maine in 1955. The Old Farmer’s Almanac is headquartered in New Hampshire.
Over the years, scientists have sometimes been annoyed by publications’ predictions. Research Their accuracy found that they were just over 50% accurate. This is comparable to random chance.
But Geiger, whose family has owned the Farmer’s Almanac for more than 90 years, said they had a “big win” with the prediction of a cold, snowy year in 2026.
“For more than 200 years, the values and wisdom of the Farmers’ Almanac have been protected and nurtured by four owner-publishers,” Geiger said. “I am grateful that Tim Conrad has found the right next custodian. I am also confident that he will respect its legacy and pass it on to generations to come.”
Unofficial Networks was founded in 2006 by Konrad and his brother John in a basement in California, according to the company’s website.
