Pakistan is battling terrorism which has increased since 2021, when the Taliban took control of Afghanistan and returned to power.
Chief spokesperson of the Taliban government, Zabihullah MujahidGave a positive reaction to the outcome of the talks held in Qatar’s capital Doha a day earlier.
He said that both the countries have signed a bilateral agreement.
“It has been decided that neither country will take any hostile action against the other, nor will they support groups carrying out attacks against Pakistan. Both sides will refrain from targeting each other’s security forces, civilians or critical infrastructure.”
A mechanism will be established in the future “under the mediation of arbitrator countries” to review bilateral claims and ensure effective implementation of this agreement.
Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif posted confirmation of the deal on Twitter.
“Cross-border terrorism from Afghanistan territory will stop immediately,” Asif wrote. “Both countries will respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. A follow-up meeting is scheduled to be held in Istanbul on October 25 between the delegations to discuss matters in detail.”
Both Mujahid and Asif thanked Qatar and Turkey for their role in facilitating the talks that led to the ceasefire.
