members of united The union operating flights from the North-Western hub will walk out over a dispute over salaries and allowances. Northwest’s hub is expected to ground most or all flights to New York, Orlando and Barbados. All routes to and from Manchester are non-stop.
130 cabin crew have rejected a pay rise of nine per cent this year and three per cent in 2026. The union says: “While they admit it sounds like a big number, the reality is that base pay is so low that workers struggle to afford basics like housing and bills.
“Many people have taken up second jobs to make up for lost wages or worked large amounts of overtime, putting them at risk for stress and burnout.”
General Secretary of Unite Sharon Graham Said: “It is completely unacceptable that hard working staff at such a profitable airline are unable to afford infrastructure, while senior management are making millions. Unite will not stand for this.”
Apart from the issue of basic pay, the union says the proposed £11 increase in night allowances for cabin crew abroad is inadequate.
Transatlantic cabin crew, hotels, as well as round-trip transportation to and from the airport are already paid for by Aer Lingus. Tax-free allowances include dinner, breakfast and incidental expenses.
The Irish airline has offered crew a 13 per cent rise this year to $115 (£86) to $130 (£97), with a 12 per cent rise in 2026. This would bring the cash payout to $145 (£108).
But Unite says: “Crew based in Manchester have much lower flying allowances than their colleagues based in Dublin.”
A spokesperson for the airline said: “Aer Lingus expresses disappointment at the outcome of the vote for industrial action by cabin crew on its UK transatlantic routes.
“Aer Lingus negotiated in good faith with the Unite trade union in relation to the benchmark market wage in the UK. Aer Lingus and Unite reached agreement on two separate comprehensive and market competitive pay deals which Unite recommended to its members, the latter being based on a recommendation following a detailed conciliation process at Acas.
“In this context, it is very disappointing that Unite has given notice of industrial action from 30 October to the end of 2 November which will be very disruptive to our customers flying between Manchester and New York, Orlando and Barbados.
“Aer Lingus will now focus on communicating directly with affected customers to re-accommodate them where possible and minimize the disruption they will cause.”
Under air passengers’ rights rules, passengers whose flights are canceled are entitled to fly to their destination as soon as possible on any airline where seats are available.
The stoppage will not affect the main Aer Lingus operations to and from Dublin. Services to and from the Irish capital severely affected in the summer of 2024 Pilots’ strike regarding salaryDozens of flights were canceled every day.
