Ahmedabad, Oct 21 (IANS) Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has started action against illegal encroachment in housing units for economically weaker sections constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). The action has been taken following several complaints that beneficiaries have rented out or transferred their allotted houses to unauthorized residents.
The estate department has said that rigorous and sustained investigation will be carried out in the coming weeks to identify more cases of illegal possession in economically weaker sections and other government housing schemes.
During a massive inspection drive conducted by the AMC estate department in 5,611 economically weaker section houses in different areas of the city, officials found that 367 units were occupied by persons other than the original allottees. In response, the corporation has sealed 35 houses and issued show cause notices to the owners of the remaining units seeking an explanation for the violations.
Officials said that in many cases, students and salaried employees were found living in properties specifically built for low-income families.
AMC clarified that such misuse of accommodation allotted by the government is a violation of PMAY norms and may lead to cancellation of accommodation allotment. PMAY is a flagship housing scheme launched by the Government of India with the goal of providing affordable housing for all.
Under this scheme, specific provisions have been made for economically weaker sections, basically families with annual income up to ₹3 lakh.
The government provides financial assistance and subsidies to help these families purchase secure and permanent homes, especially in urban areas where housing costs are high. Houses built under the Economically Weaker Section category are generally small, low-cost units built through partnerships between the Central, State and local governments, and allotted to eligible beneficiaries after proper verification.
These houses are non-transferable, meaning the beneficiaries cannot sell them, rent them out, or allow others to occupy them, as the units are meant to ensure safe shelter for economically disadvantaged families.
