Kolkata, Nov 11 (IANS) Lok Sabha member and Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday demanded a court-monitored special investigation into the death of eight people in a car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort metro station. “An impartial, timely investigation must be conducted by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under court monitoring, if necessary, to uncover the truth and ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable,” Banerjee said in a statement issued on Tuesday. He also claimed that the Union Home Ministry should clarify on the “security lapses” in the national capital, as Delhi Police comes under its direct control. “It is extremely sad that such an incident has happened in the heart of our national capital. Delhi Police, under the Union Home Ministry, is responsible for maintaining law and order. How, then, is such a serious lapse in security allowed to happen?” Banerjee asked the question. According to him, the events leading up to the blast raise questions about the internal security situation and indicate a lack of effective vigilance. Banerjee said, “Yesterday morning itself, about 350 kg of explosives and an assault rifle were recovered from Faridabad, Haryana. Viewed together, these incidents raise worrying questions about internal security and the apparent breakdown in vigilance.” Meanwhile, initial investigation into the car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort metro station has indicated that it could have been a suicide attack, causing maximum damage. The blast occurred on Monday evening when a Haryana-registered car, a Hyundai i20, parked near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort metro station exploded, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens. High alert has been issued and security has been increased in crowded public places and religious places. Following the deadly car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday, security has been tightened at the Eden Gardens stadium and across Kolkata ahead of the first Test match between India and South Africa. –IANS source/svn
