Nick Pope is not in newcastleThe goalkeeper has been replaced in the team ahead of the game against Everton Aaron Ramsdale After his error against Marseille in midweek.

Pope Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was defeated He was ruled out of the matchday squad after flying out of his box in France and injuring his groin in training on Friday.

Ramsdale has made his first Premier League start this season, having joined from Southampton in the summer following the club’s departure last campaign.

“We were training yesterday and Nick Pope felt something in his groin,” said Eddie Howe. “Initially it was not a problem but after training it became a problem. He will go for a scan in the next few days.”

Howe revealed that the competition for his starting goalkeeper was on a “knife edge”, adding that he wanted “consistency” in his selection as a goalkeeper as he defended Pope after his mistake in the Champions League defeat.

“I need to think long and hard about who I choose,” Howe said in his pre-match press conference. “I will try to do it on merit. I have the privilege of seeing the players training every day, including the goalkeepers.”

“You don’t necessarily naturally try to rotate a goalkeeper, it’s a situation of consistency. It’s a big challenge because defenders get used to a certain style. For me to consider a change but rotating is not something I want to do.

“There are always two sides. His.” [Pope’s] The goalkeeping has been very good. His shot-stopping has been incredible. Many of those hedges are undervalued and fly under the radar. Because he delivers so many of them, it’s almost expected.

“A goalkeeper’s life is always in danger. You are judged on certain moments and sometimes you don’t get any respite, there is no one on the other side to save you. Nick knows this. He has been in the game for a long time. It has been very strong [season] Apart from a few high-profile moments.”
