Chennai, 2 October (IANS) Coimbatore International Airport is ready for a major underground drainage and sewage management upgrade, which works on a 93-wheel run project as Airports of India (AAI) and Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC), which works on the current airplane.
Currently, a natural drainage channel carrying sewage from areas such as Nehru Nagar, Tidel Park and Birdhavan Nagar enters the premises of the airport from the north, crosses the imperishable road, and travels up to about 600 meters inside the airport.
The channel passes under the bottom of the runway and is only partially covered, while its entry point is filled with plastic and solid waste. This has led to dishonesty and stable sewage near the airport, which attracts birds and creates potential security threats for flight operations.
To address these issues, Civic Body has prepared a detailed project report (DPR), which proposes a closed underground canal system associated with a sewage treatment plant (STP). Once treated, the water will be thrown out of the airport, which leads to the Achunkulam tank in the natural drain.
Two STP locations are being considered – one in the city of Bindavan to the west of the airport and the other northern side where the drain is crossed under the runway.
Officials said the project is being designed as part of the expansion plan of the upcoming airport to ensure long -term stability and safety.
Discussion is underway to decide the construction method, with options, which includes a box poultry structure or large diameter pipelines to safely move away from flight paths.
While the civic body has worked at a cost of Rs 93 crore and has integrated the sewage scheme with storm water management in the surrounding areas, the final decision on execution and funding is pending.
An option project is to be included in the overall expansion functions of the airport, allowing AAI to finish the civil body to move it directly or apply it. Officials believe that along with the expansion, this integrated drainage and completing the STP system will solve long-term hygiene concerns, by reducing bird activity to improve airside security, and will be offered relief to the surrounding residential areas affected by sewage odors and obstructions.
