'A true act of democracy': US singer Mary Milburn praises PM Modi's support for CAA

Mary Millben’s comments came after the US said it was “closely monitoring” the implementation of the CAA

New Delhi:

Noted African-American singer Mary Milburn took to social media on Friday to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “showing compassionate leadership” through the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

In a post shared on X, Ms Milburn praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to provide a home for those who face persecution for their beliefs.

She highlighted the inclusive nature of the CAA, which provides a path to peace and religious freedom for various religious groups including Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists.

The singer urged the US State Department to recognize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and work to improve diplomatic relations with India, especially if he is reelected for a third term. Ms Milburn stressed that the CAA represented a true expression of democracy, providing protection and refuge for vulnerable communities.

“@StateDept, Prime Minister @narendramodi is showing compassionate leadership to those who are persecuted for their faith and providing them a home in India. This is Christian/Hindu/Sikh/Jain /Buddhists seek a peaceful path to religious freedom. When the Prime Minister was re-elected the American singer said in a post on X: “The goal of a third term is to be a better partner to democracy. The Citizenship Amendment Act is a truly democratic act. “

The United States on Thursday said it was “concerned” about India’s notification of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), adding that it was “closely monitoring” the implementation of the bill.

“We are concerned about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which was announced on March 11,” U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters at his daily press briefing on Thursday (local time).

“We are paying close attention to how this bill is implemented. Respect for religious freedom and equal treatment of all communities under the law are fundamental democratic principles,” Miller said in response to questions.

Ms Milburn also expressed her support for India’s recently implemented Citizenship (Amendment) Act on Monday, saying: “It is a path to peace. It is a truly democratic act.”

In an official post on X, Ms Milburn, a Christian and religious freedom advocate, praised Prime Minister Modi for extending Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

“As a Christian, woman of faith and global advocate for religious freedom, I applaud the Modi-led government for announcing today that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act will now provide persecuted non-Muslim immigrants, Christians , Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Parsis from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan,” she added.

In her speech, Ms. Milburn expressed her gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the Government of India for their compassionate leadership and strong commitment to upholding religious freedom.

The Union Home Ministry on Monday announced the implementation rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), days after announcing the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections.

Home Minister Amit Shah has repeatedly said that the CAA rules will be notified before the Lok Sabha elections to be held in April and May.

The CAA rules, proposed by the Narendra Modi government and passed by Parliament in 2019, are intended to cover travelers arriving in India from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and before December 31, 2014.

After the CAA was passed by Parliament in December 2019 and subsequently approved by the President, massive protests broke out across the country.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Rules 2024 enables persons eligible under CAA-2019 to apply for grant of Indian citizenship and the application has to be submitted in a completely online mode for which the government has provided a portal.

The Center on Monday notified the implementation rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 seeks to grant Indian citizenship to refugees seeking asylum in India before December 31, 2014 due to religious persecution against six minority communities in the three neighboring countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh identity.

The CAA removes legal barriers to rehabilitation and citizenship and provides a dignified life for refugees who have “suffered for decades.”
