Australian police said on Saturday they had received reports that “multiple people” had been stabbed at a busy shopping center in Sydney.
The incidents took place at the sprawling Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre, which was packed with shoppers on Saturday afternoon.
The shopping center was cordoned off and police urged people to avoid the area.
NSW Ambulance told AFP that a man had been shot dead by police. He is believed to be one of the attackers.
The motive is unclear.
Witnesses said there was panic at the scene, with shoppers fleeing to safety as police tried to secure the area.
Several people took refuge in a supermarket and stayed there for about an hour.
The air was filled with the sound of sirens and helicopters.
Surveillance footage played by local media showed a man running around the shopping center with a large knife and injured people lying on the floor.
