A stabbing incident in Illinois leaves 4 dead and 7 injured. The suspect has been detained.

A man stabbed people in multiple locations in northern Illinois, killing four people and injuring seven others, police said.

The Associated Press quoted Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd as saying that police detained a 22-year-old man for questioning. One of the people injured in the attack was in critical condition, she said.

Read said Rockford police received a medical call at 1:14 p.m. local time, followed by calls from police and paramedics.

She said police were investigating the motive for the attack and had ruled out more suspects.

“We do not believe there are any other suspects at large or at large at this particular time. At this time, we do not have a clear motive as to what led this individual to commit such a heinous crime,” she said.

She added: “My heart goes out to the families who are experiencing loss.”

The victims killed in the stabbings were a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man and a 22-year-old man. Police did not release their names.

Sheriff Gary Caruana said a Winnebago County deputy arrested the suspect after police responded to a report of a burglary.

“The young lady ran away from him. She had some stab wounds to her hands and face. Her condition was serious. A good Samaritan stopped to help her. He did suffer some stab wounds. He Being checked,'” Caruana said of one survivor.

Rockford police initially said five people were injured. Later, Cori Hilliard, public information officer for the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, said two other victims were injured.

Rockford Police Chief Rader said not all of the victims had stab wounds and no one was shot.

She called on residents in the area to check CCTV footage from their homes to see if there is anything related to the stabbing.
