A pet dog fell off a cliff by the sea san francisco It took them more than 20 minutes to cling to a narrow ledge until firefighters arrived for the rescue, officials said.
The brown and white dog was playing with another dog Tuesday in Fort Funston, a coastal park where steep cliffs can drop 200 feet (61 meters) to the beach below. The dog, who was not familiar with the area, tripped on some vegetation, lost his balance and fell onto a rock, said San Francisco Fire Department Rescue Captain Samuel Menchaca.
Firefighters dispatched a team to rescue the dog, which had found temporary shelter on a ledge about 40 feet (12 m) below the top of the cliff. A San Francisco police drone operator who was in the area heard the emergency call and captured aerial footage of the dog’s location, which he transmitted to firefighters.
Once they knew where to find the animal, a rescuer descended the sandy cliff, attached the 40-pound (18 kg) dog to a harness and held it in place as they pulled up together.
“He was happy. He knew he was saved. He was wagging his tail. He was blowing kisses to everybody,” Menchaca said.
Rescuers reunited the dog with its owner.
Menchaca urged people to stay on marked trails, keep their dogs on leashes and keep their small children close.
“You might think it’s a small berm or hill, but it’s a significant drop,” he said.
“Unfortunately firefighters have to do a lot of rescues in this area,” Menchaca said. They train for it and always will, he said, but they don’t want people to get hurt.
,One The best way to avoid injury on these rocks and our beautiful coastal stretches of San Francisco is to stay on marked trails,” he said.
