The aircraft’s wheels became stuck in a small depression on the new concrete surface.
Police and fire department personnel present at the spot immediately reached the spot and pulled the plane out of the submerged area.
“The concrete had not set completely and hence, when the helicopter landed it could not support its weight and potholes formed where the wheels touched the ground,” an official said.
A senior police officer told PTI that the stadium was chosen at the last minute as the landing site for the President’s helicopter. Because of this, the helipad had to be set up very quickly, and was built only late on Tuesday night, just a day before the landing.
Earlier the landing was to be at Nilakkal near Pamba, but it was changed due to bad weather.
President Murmu is on a four-day visit to Kerala. Instead of taking a dip in the river at Pampa, the President will wash his feet as part of the traditional cleansing ritual.
Later, she will travel to Sannidhanam after preparing the Irumudi in a ceremony at the Ganapathy temple. The next day, she will unveil the statue of former President KR Narayanan at the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram.
After that, she will inaugurate the Mahasamadhi centenary celebrations of Sree Narayana Guru at Sivagiri Math in Varkala.
Before concluding her visit, she will also attend the closing ceremony of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of St. Thomas College, Palai.
