“Smoke is also coming out from the second floor, where the fire broke out in the warehouse of the shopping mall,” he said. According to the officer, a lot of inflammable materials and clothes were reportedly kept on the second floor.

Another officer said that the fire is now in the rear part of the building. “However, due to non-adherence to safety norms during construction, fire engines are not able to reach the rear,” he said.

‘Zero visibility, heavy smoke, significant damage’

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) issued a statement saying that fire tenders are trying to control the fire by entering the building from the lower floors, adding that a detailed assessment will be conducted after the fire is brought under control.

”The fire could not be effectively controlled in the initial stage due to zero visibility and heavy smoke.” The building complex and surrounding areas have been secured. “Evacuation protocols were initiated for safety,” the statement read, according to PTI.

Initial observations suggest that there is significant damage to the affected floors, but a detailed assessment will be conducted once the fire is completely contained.
