A look at 7 natural heritage locations in India, taken as World Heritage Sites of UNESCO

New Delhi, September 21 (IANS) In a notable development, India’s presence in the UNESCO World Heritage sites has seen a spike with seven natural and picturesque places, which is making it in the temporary list, thus paves the way for their formal inclusion in the final list.

With these additions, the country’s count in the temporary list has increased from 62 to 69 properties. The Ministry of Culture said that after this inclusion, India now has 49 cultural, 17 natural and three mixed heritage properties listed in the UNESCO list.

The newly listed sites in Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra, Geological Heritage of St. Mary island in Karnataka, Meghlayan age caves, Naga Hill Opiolite in Nagaland, Era Matty Cson in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala.

In particular, the inclusion in the temporary list is a precursor for its enrollment in the prestigious World Heritage List.

A government statement said, “In addition to the new sites in the UNESCO list, India’s unwavering commitment to preserve and promote India’s extraordinary natural and cultural heritage.

In particular, India recently hosted the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi in July 2024, with the participation of more than 2,000 delegates from more than 140 countries.

Deccan traps at panchgani and mahabaleshwar, maharashtra

They are some of the best preserved and some of the world’s most studied lava flows. These volcanic structures are located within the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, already a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showing the geological miracles of India.

St. Marriage Island Cluster, Karnataka
