The shooting occurred Saturday afternoon at a building on the campus where final exams were being held. Authorities said the suspect was wearing dark clothing and left the building on foot.
The violence led to shelter-in-place orders for the large university area. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said “we have every resource available” to find the suspect.
“Sadly, today is the day that the city of Providence and the state of Rhode Island prayed would never come,” the mayor said. “We have heard about terrible acts of gun violence and active shooter situations in other places, but not here.”
Brown is a private institution with approximately 7,300 undergraduate students and over 3,000 graduate students.

A 43-year-old gunman opened fire inside an academic building and student union, killing three students and injuring five others. He later killed himself miles from the complex in East Lansing during a shootout with police.
University of Virginia: November 2022, 3 dead
A student and former member of the school’s football team shot three current players aboard a charter bus as they were returning from a field trip, sparking panic and a 12-hour lockdown of the campus until the suspect was captured. Two other students were also injured on campus. The shooter has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and other charges and is awaiting sentencing.
Northern Arizona University: October 2015, 1 dead
Just a few weeks into his freshman year, a student came to campus in Flagstaff and opened fire. One student was killed and three others were injured in the first fatal shooting since the university was established in 1899. The attacker later pleaded guilty to murder and aggravated assault and was sentenced to six years in prison.

A 26-year-old man opened fire in his writing class in rural Roseburg, Oregon, killing his instructor and eight other people. Nine other people were also injured. After this the shooter killed himself.
