Plantimex has issued a recall for its Mamison lidocaine ointment sold at popular retailers wal-mart And TargetDue to fear that it could poison children and lead to their death.
About 50,330 containers of the ointment were recalled after regulators learned that it was not being sold in child-resistant packaging, as required by law.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says ointment containing lidocaine is sold at Walmart and Target stores nationwide and online, and is a serious danger to children. The warning came in a recall issued last week.
Regulators said that given the defective packaging, the ointment posed a “risk of serious injury or death from poisoning” if young children swallowed its contents.
Plantimex is required to have child-resistant packaging under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970, which requires similar drugs and other hazardous chemicals to be sold in packages that are difficult for small children to open but accessible to adults.
This ointment was sold from April 2024 to October 2025 for about $10.
Mamison Pain Relieving Topical Ointment comes in an orange jar with a white continuous thread lid that has the Mamison trademark printed on the lid and container. The ointment was sold in 3.52-ounce plastic jars. Only jars with UPC code 860006498115 are included in the recall.
As of Monday, there were no reports of injuries.
Customers with affected ointments should keep the recalled jars safely out of the sight and reach of children. According to regulators, customers can contact Plantimex to receive a free replacement lid.
Once the product is secured with the replacement lid, consumers may use the product as directed.
