Hyde Park, Covent Garden, Mayfair and Soho can be reached in less than half an hour by Tube. The side of Portman Square is lined with townhouses overlooking a private garden, built in the 1780s before being redeveloped in the nineties. As its name suggests, the hotel was originally built in 1970 in memory of Sir Winston Churchill and was completely renovated in 2017. It has high ceilings (with grand chandeliers and ornate details), marble floors, pillars, paneled walls, and contemporary chairs and rugs. It combines a sense of classic timelessness and old money with a modern aesthetic. You’ll find many tributes to the former Prime Minister, including a large photograph of Churchill and his wife Clementine in the main lounge.
Although it is a busy hotel in central London, it has a relaxed atmosphere with a gentle buzz rather than noise and bustle. The spacious open-plan design means the reception, lobby, main restaurant and lounge all flow into one another – avoiding bottlenecks for guests and creating a sociable atmosphere.
Service
From the warm welcome at reception to the extremely attentive restaurant staff, service is efficient and friendly everywhere. At dinner, the team prepared some gluten-free bread on the fly after receiving late notice, and paid close attention to the menu. We noticed staff coming forward to help fellow guests too, including calmly assisting the parents of a hungry child who needed a high chair quickly enough for breakfast, and assisting with a variety of dietary needs.
bed and bath
The hotel has 440 rooms (including 50 suites) with decor details including soft suede headboards, heavily textured curtains, plush velvet chairs and a herringbone-patterned carpet. The interior colors are neutral, and it all adds to the casual yet deluxe ambiance. There’s a Nespresso coffee machine, minibar and free WiFi, and complimentary glass bottles of Marlish water next to the bed.
We stayed in a king bedroom overlooking the lush Portman Square Gardens. The bed size is extremely spacious, making it feel comfortable and relaxing to stay in. Even though the hotel is on a busy main road, traffic noise didn’t bother us – probably because of the thick curtains. You’ll also find pictures of animals on the walls, including cats, dogs, fish and birds, as a further nod to Churchill (he had a variety of pets).
Bathrooms feature full-size Pharmacopoeia products and you’ll find full-size Molton Brown products in the bath or shower within the suites. The hotel told us that in an effort to reduce single-use plastic, it changed the smaller Molton Brown bottles it previously provided to these larger sizes. We were attracted by the heated toilet seat, which was an unexpected and warming element.
Most rooms are 25-27 square meters in size, while there is a larger family room of 52 square meters and for those wanting more space, suites range from 53 square meters to 325 square meters.

Food and Drink
The hotel’s main restaurant, The Montagu Kitchen, serves all-day dining, including breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. For cocktails, bar snacks and al fresco dining, visit The Churchill Bar & Terrace.
Montagu Kitchen is a Mediterranean grill house that serves simple yet hearty and delicious dishes. There is also an integral bar offering wines, cocktails and other drinks to taste with your meal. The team talked to us about gluten-free and vegan options, of which there were many. Gluten-free bread also appeared, which was prepared instantly by the chef and was delicious and tasty. For starters we ate Burrata and Heirloom Tomatoes, followed by Coastal Seafood Risotto and finished with Chocolate and Caramel Delices. Breakfast combines a fresh buffet with cooked options, and it was here that we saw the hotel’s diverse clientele of businessmen, families and solo travelers.
The Churchill Bar & Terrace has a cosmopolitan appeal, and its secluded nook-like design, with gorgeous green and gold colours, is a sharp contrast to the airy openness of The Montagu Kitchen. A bronze statue of the former Prime Minister sits near one of the outdoor tables, while love letters between Churchill and his wife, along with original photographs, are displayed on the walls. Here, you can even emulate Churchill by ordering a cigar with your drink and indulging in the bar menu.

Guests staying at the hotel have access to the inner city’s private Portman Square Gardens, where you’ll also find a tennis court. There is a gym with Technogym equipment and a wellness area offering spa treatments, as well as three meeting and event spaces. A shop on the ground floor sells souvenirs and refreshments.
