I’m a fashion writer and this is where I find tights that don’t tear or form stairs

We’ve all been there: You’ve decided on an outfit and put the finishing touches on it to completeTo leave home only with you tights Destroy within a few minutes. It’s too late to turn back, and your carefully crafted look has been spoiled by stairs that only get longer throughout the day – it’s an annoyance that most women feel throughout the winter months.

Primark’s tattered tights were a right to entry into university and a signature of my group of girls on student nights out. But while you might be able to get rid of the mess in your early 20s, it’s less tempting to mess with the stairs in the office when you’re closer to 30.

After the embarrassment of having a ladder fall on my leg at a fancy press event, I challenged myself to find the perfect pair of tights that were resistant and reliable. For reference, my preference is low-denier (between 15-30), which gives a dressy opaque look but provides enough coverage to ward off the winter chill.

My first step? Eventually I stopped shopping at Primark (sorry, Primark). Although they’ve certainly gotten more expensive since my university years, the retailer’s tights still cost just £4 – a price I wasn’t willing to put up with. Offering similar affordability, I tried H&M’s £5.99 two-pack of 20 denier tights (hmm.com), which survived wear and tear once before breaking a second time. On to the next.

M&S has long been a favorite on the high street for lingerie and hosiery, so I also bought a three pack of its 15 denier tights. Setting you back £10 (marksandspencer.com), each pair of tights served me well for multiple wears. But, given the pleasing purse-friendly price, I wasn’t too surprised when a pair burst after about two months.

Feeling it was time for me to part with a little more cash to get long-lasting quality, I tried beloved Italian label Calzedonia. The buyers of the brand are in respectable company. The likes of Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner (who is an ambassador), Emily Blunt, Gigi Hadid and Julia Roberts are all among its fans. A pair of 30 denier tights will set you back £9, while lower denier tights will cost around £15.99, but I couldn’t argue with the A-lister endorsement. This is my decision.

,Calzedonia,

Calzedonia’s best-selling 30 denier tights are made from soft microfiber material. Unlike cheaper pairs of tights, Hoosiers don’t feel as delicate and flimsy when pulling them on (it’s usually touch and go with my long manicure). The design features a comfortable cotton gusset, flat seams for a seamless finish and an extra stiff waist band that helps shape your figure. Due to the smooth and matte finish, the tights do not stick or stretch.

I've got a black and red pair of Calzedonia's apparently indestructible tights

Available in eight finishes, including on-trend chocolate brown and minimalist back, I also love the red color for Christmas parties. You may be able to get a pack of three or five for a similar price elsewhere, but the quality of the Calzedonia pair is unmatched and they wash well for continued use. Time will tell if they’re completely indestructible – but I have high hopes.
