The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted dense fog, cold wave conditions and snowfall at isolated places across India on Thursday, December 18.

Fog is expected to be dense in the morning over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas.

Dense fog is also likely in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and northeastern regions. Cold wave is expected to continue in isolated areas, especially Uttarakhand and Western Madhya Pradesh.

North India and Delhi-NCR

North India is still facing the worst of the winter weather. Dense fog blanketed Delhi and surrounding areas on Thursday morning, severely affecting vision and creating hazardous traffic conditions.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) said the air quality index (AQI) of the capital fell to 358. The AQI at four of Delhi’s 39 monitoring sites was in the severe category, while several were at the brink.

Transportation has already been affected by the fog; Major airlines like IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet have issued travel alerts as flight operations at northern airports grappled with poor visibility, delays and cancellations.

Western Himalayan region

While western disturbances affect the weather, light rain and snowfall is expected during the day at isolated places over the hills of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Snow accumulation may occur at some places in hill stations and higher reaches, which is characteristic of mid-winter conditions.

East, Central and South India

While isolated fog patches may occur over some areas of the northeast and Odisha, the most severe fog and wintry weather is concentrated in the north and northwest. Meanwhile, most of the southern and central regions will experience dry, generally pleasant weather, with only sporadic early morning fog in some interior areas.

Maharashtra

Maximum temperatures are rising in the Konkan region, which includes districts like Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. In Pune, Central Maharashtra, the maximum temperature is expected to be around 28°C and the minimum temperature is expected to be around 9°C.

Cold continues in Marathwada region. The temperature in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar can reach a maximum of 30°C and a minimum of 10°C. The cold weather is getting worse in North Maharashtra. The temperature in Nashik is expected to drop below 10 degrees Celsius.

cold balance and temperature

Cold wave warning has been issued in large parts of North and Central India with minimum temperatures remaining below seasonal norms. Minimum temperatures are not predicted to change much during the next several days over the northwest Indian plains, but are likely to rise gradually by 2-3 degrees Celsius, especially in places like Gujarat and Maharashtra.
