a leading Muslim Civil rights group has sued in America Florida Governor Ron DeSantis On its order designating it and another organization as a “foreign terrorist organization” it said the directive was unconstitutional.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, known as CAIR, has more than 20 chapters across the United States and its work includes legal action, advocacy, and education outreach.

The lawsuit was filed late Monday night by CAIR-Foundation and its affiliate in the state, CAIR-Florida. The lawsuit asks a federal judge in Tallahassee to declare DeSantis’ order illegal and unconstitutional and block it from being implemented.

“They have usurped the federal government’s prerogative to identify and designate terrorist organizations by baselessly designating CAIR as a terrorist organization,” the lawsuit says.

CAIR said in the lawsuit that it was targeted by DeSantis for defending people’s free speech rights in cases in which state officials and officials elsewhere tried to punish or silence people who expressed support for Palestinian human rights.

The order issued by DeSantis last week gives the same “foreign terrorist” label to the pan-Arab Islamic political movement the Muslim Brotherhood. chairman donald trump An executive order was issued last month that speeds up the process of designating some chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization.

The Governor’s order directs Florida agencies to prevent the two groups and those providing material support to them from receiving contracts, employment and funding from a state executive or cabinet agency.

According to CAIR, there are an estimated 500,000 Muslim residents in Florida.

Reached by email for comment Tuesday, Molly Best, the governor’s press secretary, referred to DeSantis’s recent social media posts on the subject, in which he said he was awaiting a trial. In one post, DeSantis said, “I look forward to the findings – especially CAIR Finance. SHOULD BE ILLUMINATED!”

Texas Government. greg abbott A similar proclamation has been issued in Texas. CAIR last month asked a federal judge to strike down Abbott’s proclamation, saying in a lawsuit that it is “not only contrary to the United States Constitution, but it finds no support in any Texas law.”
