A passenger bus overturned on a highway in central Iran, killing 13 people and injuring more than a dozen, state news agency IRNA reported.
The bus was leaving late on Monday night isfahan in the northeastern city of Mashhad when it hit the central guardrail of the highway, went into the opposite lane and collided with a taxi before overturning, police said.
Eleven bus passengers and two people in the taxi died in the accident, while six women and seven men were hospitalized, IRNA said.
Emergency teams, including ambulances and rescue units, were dispatched to the scene immediately after the accident.
Iran has one of the worst traffic records in the world, with approximately 20,000 deaths annually. The reason for such a large number of deaths is widespread disregard for traffic laws, unsafe vehicles and inadequate emergency services in its vast rural areas.
