In a video now going viral on social media, the 74-year-old JDU chief is seen handing over the certificate to an AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) doctor and then pulling off her hijab.
The incident occurred during the ceremony of distributing appointment letters to over 1,000 newly recruited AYUSH doctors at ‘Samvad’, the Chief Minister’s secretariat.
As Nusrat Parveen covered her face and approached her to collect her letter, the Chief Minister approached her and asked, “What is this?” And then pulled her hijab down, exposing her face.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, who was standing nearby, was seen moving forward to pull the CM’s sleeve in an apparent attempt to stop him.
Opposition parties have strongly condemned the act, calling his actions “despicable” and demanding his resignation.
Sharing the video on social media, RJD questioned whether Kumar’s “mental state” had reached a “pathetic state” or whether he had become a 100% Sanghi. “What has happened to Nitish ji? Has his mental condition now reached an absolutely pathetic state or has Nitish Babu now become 100% Sanghi?” It wrote on X.

Reacting to the incident, RJD spokesperson Ajaz Ahmed said that this action reflects the attitude of JDU-BJP alliance towards women.
He said, “By removing the hijab from the face of a veiled Muslim woman, he (Kumar) has made it clear what kind of politics JDU and BJP are doing in the name of women empowerment… Removing a woman’s veil is an act of snatching away the right to live as per one’s culture and religious freedom, which is guaranteed to all by the Indian Constitution and its constitutional system.”
Congress also posted a video on Twitter calling this action ‘shameful’ and ‘despicable’ and demanded his resignation. The party said, “This is Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Look at his shamelessness – a woman doctor had come to collect her appointment letter, and Nitish Kumar pulled her hijab. A person holding the highest position in Bihar is openly indulging in such a disgusting act. Think about it – how safe will women be in the state? Nitish Kumar should immediately resign for this disgusting behaviour. This despicability is unforgivable.”

Shiv Sena UBT leader Priyanka Chaturvedi described the act as “public harassment”. In a post on Twitter, he said, “This is absolutely condemnable and forcefully pulling the veil of a woman is nothing but public harassment of a woman by the elected CM.”

In another post he said, “It is her dignity and knowledge of equality that makes her stand with the CM to get the respect she deserves.”
In October 2025, ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, a viral video showing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar garlanding a woman at a public meeting sparked intense political debate over his health. While sharing the video, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav wrote, “Brother, he is a wonderful man. If the Chief Minister is healthy then why is he behaving like this after reading the written speech?”
