The basic guidelines for good style aren’t mysterious; In fact, you use them in conversation every day. In conversation and writing, we rely heavily on collaboration to understand all exchanges, and a sophisticated pragmatic style makes collaboration easier.

Writers develop such a style by recognizing that readers expect the same things that listeners expect in conversation: clarity, relevance, and proportion.
