An official statement issued on Friday, December 12, said the Union Public Service Commission has decided to allot ‘centres of choice’ to candidates with benchmark disabilities for all its examinations with a view to increasing accessibility for such candidates.

The statement said that recognizing the logistical challenges and special needs faced by these candidates, the Commission decided to ensure that every person with benchmark disability (PwBD) is allotted the examination center which they have indicated as their preferred choice in the application form.

Speaking about the initiative, UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar said after analyzing the exam center data of the last five years, “We observed that some centers like Delhi, Cuttack, Patna, Lucknow and others reach their capacity limits very quickly due to the high number of applicants.”

“This creates challenges for PwBD candidates, who are then forced to choose centers that may not be convenient for them. I am happy that, with this decision, every PwBD candidate will now be assured of their preferred centre, thereby ensuring maximum convenience and ease while appearing for the UPSC examinations.”

To implement this initiative, the Commission has decided that the existing capacity of each center will be utilized first by PwBD and non-PwBD candidates.

“Once the center reaches its full capacity, it will no longer be available for selection by non-PWBD candidates; however, PWBD candidates will continue to have the option to select that centre. Thereafter, UPSC will make arrangements for additional capacity so that no PWBD candidate is deprived of the center of their choice,” the statement issued by the commission said.
