USA TodayEditor-in-Chief Karen Bohn is out after more than a year leading Gannett’s transformational flagship newspaper.

His exit was confirmed Wednesday by USA TODAY senior vice president Monica Richardson. No reason was given. Bohan became the paper’s top editor in September 2024 after a long career writing about and editing politics for the newspaper and, before that, reuters News service.

“Karen Bohn has been a valued colleague during her tenure at USA TODAY,” Richardson said in a statement. “We sincerely wish him well and thank him for his many contributions.”

Like many news organizations, Gannett has suffered financially over the past two decades, and its leadership announced over the summer that it was cutting $100 million.

In a social media message announcing his departure, Bohn referenced “the many challenges facing our industry” while praising USA TODAY journalists.

“I’m extremely proud of the work we did, including audience-first storytelling, watchdog journalism, and deeply reported narrative stories,” Bohn wrote.
