Greer made the comments in response to a question from Senator Jerry Moran on more exports of American agriculture.
The comments come on a day when a US delegation led by US Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer is in India for two days of talks and discussions on issues regarding tariffs.
Greer said an American team is currently in India negotiating a trade deal. He acknowledged that India has been “trying hard” to oppose imports of certain crops, meat and dairy products.
However, Greer also noted that India has been quite “forward-looking” in its negotiations and that the country is a viable alternative market to the US.
India was one of the first countries to begin talks on a trade deal with the Trump administration. As the August 1 deadline passed, US President Donald Trump initially imposed a limit of 25%, which was later increased to 50%, on India’s oil purchases from Russia.
