Speaking as part of the pre-match build-up coverage on Amazon Prime, Shearer – who faced a similar feud with manager Ruud Gullit during his playing days with Newcastle – gave an insight into Salah’s thought process.
“What he said to the media is not right. You shouldn’t say it, you should keep it in the dressing room,” Shearer said.
“He shouldn’t say this in front of the media, but I want to speak about his mentality and what he has achieved. He will be embarrassed, he will be hurt, his ego is damaged because he will look at what he has done and achieved and think that for eight years he has led that football club forward.
“Scored at every opportunity and won everything he could. He’s played a big part in this and it wouldn’t have been possible without him.”
Shearer also pointed out how Salah’s position within the team and club brings additional criticism but he disagreed with comments made after the Leeds result.
Shearer added, “He feels he has borne the brunt of the criticism and sometimes you have to accept that when you’re a superstar at a football club.”
“What he said to the media cannot be condoned… When you go to the world press and tell them how you feel, it is not right. It should be kept at home.”
Sturridge echoed those views with his own opinion but went further by suggesting that the situation could be resolved amicably.
“I think the way he’s handled this situation is obviously not right, I’m sure he knows the way he’s handled it is not the way a professional of his stature should handle the situation,” Sturridge said.
“I also think he is a player who expresses frustration and anger because he believes he can help the team in these moments. Five months ago he was the best player in the Premier League, making assists, scoring goals, being a leader. Personally he feels that his performances, no matter how bad they are right now, are going to be good again.
“Right now, it is a solvable situation, time will do so [Salah] going to [Africa Cup of Nations] But it’s a moment that comes as a surprise to everyone involved. I would like the club and that relationship to improve.”
