wrexhamCelebrity owners have sold minority stake in their budding football club Apollo Sports Capital, a US-based private equity firm.
The deal, which was announced on Monday without strings attached, includes investment by Apollo in the redevelopment of Wrexham’s stadium and the area around the small Welsh town, which has gained fame by having a football club named after the American actor. Ryan Reynolds And Rob Mack bought it in 2021 and helped make a popular documentary about the community.
Wrexham, the oldest club in Wales dating back to 1864, has earned three consecutive promotions in the English football system and entered the Second Division Championship for the current season, one level away. Premier LeagueWrexham entered this week in 12th place in the 24-team standings, The team had not been in the second division since the 1981–82 season,
“From day one, we wanted to build a sustainable future for Wrexham Association Football Club. And to do it with a bit of heart and humour. The dream has always been to take this club to the Premier League while remaining true to the city. This kind of growth requires world-class partners who share our vision and ambition, and Apollo does exactly that,” Wrexham’s ownership said in a statement distributed by the club.
Reynolds and Mack sold a stake in the club last year to a separate investment group based in the United States. Apollo recently purchased a majority stake in Spanish football club Atletico Madrid, with the deal expected to be finalized early next year.
