The Lok Sabha is set for another heated debate on Tuesday (December 9). The lower house of Parliament is set to hold a full-scale discussion on electoral reforms, including special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The opposition has been demanding a discussion on this for several days and last week a consensus was reached between the treasury bench and the opposition.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will initiate the debate. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will lead the opposition’s intervention today, while Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal is scheduled to reply on Wednesday.

Since the beginning of the winter session, opposition parties have been demanding a debate on electoral reforms and SIR. In the first week, several opposition leaders protested inside and outside Parliament. The leaders held posters and placards against the special intensive revision of voter lists.

After several rounds of discussions between the government and opposition leaders, it was agreed to hold the debate on SIR before the debate on 150 years of Vande Mataram.
