The Cleveland Cavaliers have been fined a whopping $250,000 nba For violating the league’s player participation policy.
The fine was issued after the team rested All-Star guard Darius Garland during a nationally televised game against the Toronto Raptors on November 24.
This is the second time this season the Cavaliers have been penalized for such a violation.
Earlier on November 18, he was fined $100,000 for resting both Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley during a game against the Miami Heat on November 12.
A league investigation confirmed that Garland was deemed fit to play in one of the team’s back-to-back games.
While he performed against the LA Clippers on November 23, he was absent from the next night’s game in Toronto, which was televised nationally in both the US and Canada.
Garland is classified as a ‘star player’ under the policy. The Raptors ultimately won 110–99, extending their winning streak to eight games.
Cleveland also played that game without De’Andre Hunter, who was rested, and Jarrett Allen was ruled out with a sprained finger.
Since the Raptors played without Garland last month, the Cavaliers have appeared in four games, including an NBA Cup match.
They have struggled in recent weeks and have lost three of their last four matches.
Cleveland has been defeated by the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics and Portland Trail Blazers, but they managed to get a win against the Indiana Pacers.
The team, which currently has a 13-10 record in the NBA this season, returns to action on Friday night when it hosts the San Antonio Spurs, and they will be at home again on Saturday night against the Golden State Warriors.
They will have about a week off before traveling to face the Washington Wizards.
