Tempers flared at pool’s Mosconi Cup, the equivalent of the Ryder Cup, when Team Europe’s Jason Shaw made an obscene gesture at a fan in the audience and confronted him.
Shaw led Europe to an 11-6 victory in last year’s edition and was in fine form on Wednesday as his side raced into a 4-0 lead on the opening night at London’s Alexandra Palace.
But in the pool itself – held in a heavily partisan, Ryder Cup-style environment – it was eclipsed by Scott confronting a fan in the stands during her match against Skylar Woodward.
Shaw made an offensive gesture and uttered a profanity-filled profanity towards the fan, although it was not clear what provoked him.
He continued to talk to the audience, pointing in their direction, and pointing them toward Team USA staff members who appeared to be complaining. It was not clear whether the viewer was ejected.
USA captain Woodward appeared surprised by the incident, but it had no effect on the result and Shaw won the match 5–2, giving Europe a 3–0 lead.
Having won 15 of the 18 Mosconi Cups since 2007, Europe is aiming for a sixth consecutive title. Seven-time champion Shaw told sky sports Before the start of the event: “I don’t think they’ll be able to stop the rot. We lost the same five last year so I think we know what to expect.
“We play our game and move on, they will collapse. They do it all the time. We can see it on their faces – that’s the difference between us and them!”
“You should be watching me strut my stuff and do my thing. I’m doing my Jason Shaw thing. We’ll win 11-6. I can’t see them going by six.
“We’re here to win – they’re here to get paid.”
