He was arrested inside the store minutes after the alleged theft.
The man entered no plea when he appeared in Auckland District Court on November 29.
“He was medically assessed at the time of his arrest and an officer has been assigned to continue monitoring the man,” Inspector Gray Anderson said in a statement.
“The pendant has not been recovered at this stage.”
The alleged loot was a limited-edition Faberge egg pendant inspired by the 1983 James deeply concerned film.
At the center of the film’s story is a jewel-smuggling operation involving a fake Fabergé egg.
The egg, of which only 50 were made, is crafted from gold, painted with green enamel and set with 183 diamonds and two sapphires, the shop’s website says.
The pendant is 8.4 centimeters (3.3 in) long and is mounted on a stand.
Its retail price is NZ$33,000.
An item description states, “The egg opens and inside is hidden an 18 karat yellow gold octopus, decorated with white diamond suckers and black diamond eyes.”

Only time and digestion will tell if there are any more octopus surprises to come.
“Given that this individual is in police custody, we have a duty to monitor him given the circumstances of what has happened,” Mr Anderson said.
The accused man is scheduled to appear in court again on December 8.
