stranger things Fans are decoding a mysterious scene hinting at Will Byers’ feelings for Mike Wheeler in the final season.
first volume of Netflix of the show final season Thursday (November 27) arrived, and a scene appeared to hint at Will’s feelings for his best friend.
Throughout the show, It is indicated Will (Noah Schnapp) may be gay, with a group of fans believing he will be romancing Mike (Finn Wolfhard), nicknamed “Baylor”.
But a scene from season five’s fourth episode appears to shatter those expectations, Demogorgon-style.
*Spoilers follow – you have been warned*
While Will’s sexuality is almost confirmed thanks to some productive chat with Robin (Maya Hawke), one scene features Robin watching Will chat with Mike.
Following years of hints from the show, this scene strongly suggests that Will does indeed have feelings for Mike – but those feelings are not reciprocated. Robin watches and smiles sadly as he sees the couple talking.
A later scene shows Robin sharing an anecdote with Will, in which she uses her past to analyze Will’s situation. She tells him that after falling in love with a girl named Tammy Thompson, he lost himself until he found an old film reel of himself as a child, and rediscovered his self-worth.
Robin’s speech to Will:
“I found this 8mm film reel – it was a silly movie I made in fourth grade, but I picked it up on the projector and suddenly, I was looking at this little version of me. And this little me, I hardly recognized her. She was so carefree and fearless. She just loved every part of herself. That’s when it hit me – it was never about Tammy; it was always about me. I was looking for answers in someone else, but I had all the answers. I just needed to stop being so afraid – afraid of who I really am, once I did that, I felt so free.
While some fans believed that the earlier scene between Will and Mike kept alive hopes of a budding romance between the pair, others interpreted Robin’s speech as indicating that Will should move on from Mike because they believed that Will’s feelings were unrequited.

One fan wrote, “People don’t get it!!! Robin’s face when Will and Mike were talking was not positive!!! It was a face of pity because she knows Mike doesn’t have the same feelings.” reddit,
Another said: “It couldn’t be more obvious what was going on. I was so confused when I opened the X, and somehow the Bylers are taking this as a win?”
An additional viewer said: “She later talks to Tammy about introducing Will to the fact that sometimes it doesn’t always work out, the most important thing is to know his self-worth. After episode four, I really think Baylor won’t be able to handle it.”
Robin’s conversation with Will takes on an important new light in the final moments of the episode, when Vecna berates Will for being weak-minded – but then Will, remembering Robin’s words, thinks about his upbringing and steals Vecna’s power over the Demogorgons to save Mike.
Speaking about how the series’ creators, the Duffer brothers, dealt with a potential romance in 2022, Schnapp revealed Diversity: “I feel like they never really delve into or explicitly say how Will is. I think that’s the beauty of it, that it’s just up to the audience’s interpretation if it’s just him refusing to grow up and growing up slower than his friends, or if he’s actually gay.”
Wolfhard reported earlier this week attitude That if Mike developed feelings for Mike, the story wouldn’t be earned.
